Becoming a Teacher in CALIFORNIA: Guide for Foreign Educators
If you’re a foreign teacher wishing to teach in California, here are the official requirements for foreign credential evaluation and other useful information:
Transcript Evaluation:
All foreign educators must have their transcripts (and any certificates and licenses obtained) evaluated by one of the Commission-approved foreign transcript evaluation agencies1. This evaluation should be detailed and course-by-course, not just a basic summary.
The evaluation must show a bachelor’s degree and a teacher preparation program that includes student teaching.
Credential Types:
There are three types of teaching credentials available in California:
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential: For elementary school teachers.
Single Subject Teaching Credential: For middle and secondary school teachers.
Education Specialist Instruction Credential: For special education teachers.
Each type authorizes different subject areas and has specific requirements for obtaining them.
Renewal Requirements:
Most foreign educators receive an initial or “Preliminary” credential. To obtain a Clear credential, they need to complete additional requirements called renewal requirements.
The holder of a Preliminary credential has 5 years to complete these renewal requirements to “clear” the credential.
Once a Clear credential has been issued, it can be renewed online every 5 years.
Serving Multilingual or English Learner Students:
If you plan to work with English learners, you may need an English Learner Authorization.
There are also emergency permits available for specific situations.
Getting Hired:
After fulfilling the credential requirements, foreign teachers can apply for teaching positions in California’s K-12 public schools.
Additionally, if you’re interested in teaching in other states, you can refer to the NACES website for state-specific requirements1. Keep in mind that each state may have its own unique regulations, so it’s essential to research thoroughly before making the transition to a teaching job in any state.
